“Very well, let’s go get your face,” you say.
A smile passes over the spectre’s lips and your brother’s faceless body nods, then they both point towards the golden gate, etched with scenes of battle and bloodshed.
You walk towards it, and the echoes of a hundred skeletal footsteps rise from the stairwell behind you. The treasure piled in between the sarcophagi arrayed around the chamber’s wall’s glistens invitingly as you pass.
A deathly chill radiates from the gate as you stop before it. Goosebumps prickle your skin and your misted breath hangs heavy in the air.
You reach to touch it and a whisper calls from the keyhole. The shining metal is like ice against your skin. Behind you, the footsteps grow louder, closer.
You push against the door, but it’s locked as you knew it would be. You peel your hand off the door, flexing it against the cold as you turn back to your brother’s spectre and body.
“Any ideas?”
The spectre shakes his head. The body resumes his soft humming. Past them, towards the chamber’s far end, a skeleton emerges from the stairwell, followed by another, then another, clambering slowly towards the three of you with claws outstretched and rotten teeth chattering.
You look from the oncoming horde to the sword hanging from your belt. At your back, the keyhole whispers, and the door in which it sits stands strong.
Thank you for joining in on the adventure.
I think the treasure pile might offer us some legitimate possibilities: key, place to hide… musical instruments: harp, trumpet, dare I say a magical lute.
